In Ayurveda, underweight and overweight are signs that the vata, pitta, and kapha doshas are out of balance. This is not necessarily dependent on the amount of food intake but rather dependent on improper digestion, which causes an accumulation of toxins (ama).
Although people with kapha dosha are more likely to be overweight, people with the other two doshas may also suffer from obesity. Improper nutrient absorption can cause people to be underweight as well but a faulty attempt to correct this may backfire and result in obesity.
Ayurvedic treatments help permanently reset the mind-body stability to regulate the digestive fires and fat storage. As there is no universal Ayurvedic treatment for a condition, careful analysis of an individual’s condition and dosha determine the approach to be taken that will eliminate ama from the body.
